EMILE DURRER GASSE | PHOTOGRAPHER

Born into wanderlust by nomadic parents, who brought him, at 3 months old, to an Ibizencan finca to be raised and nurtured by the balearic landscape with its abundance of clear light and sea. His family’s work and passion for anthropology and travel meant regular trips around the world, witnessing a multitude of diverse cultures, each with their own unique philosophies and ways of living.

These experiences have greatly influenced Emile’s work, cultivating his affinity for raw and honest qualities. These qualities are both playfully expressed in the natural romance of his images, and also seductive in their effortless capturing and harbouring of soft lights and tangible hues. Whilst thriving on the elusiveness and serendipitous outcomes of working only with analog film, the artist instinctively looks to communicate a timeless approach to life; simple, slow and in harmony with nature.

Hailing from Catalunya Barcelona, Oriol Maspons spent the golden ages of the 1950s to 1980s as a photojournalist, working primarily as a correspondent for the magazine Arte Fotográfico living and working between Barcelona and Paris. In the summer of 1954 Oriol travelled to Ibiza for the first time and captured the island untouched by the outside world and yet to be discovered.

Equipped with his Hasselblad he captured the dusty walkways of Dalt Vila, unknowing to him that these streets would become bustling tourist attractions and thriving restaurants. In the 70’s he would go on to capture the hippy movement transitioning over the island from the rest of Europe, the island starting to attract attention from escapist youth. From the early 80s we see the beginnings of Ibiza’s rambunctious nightlife, the insides of Pacha and Ku at Privilege, the first drag queens of Calle de Virgin and Paula’s Ibiza Boutique.

Maspons in his passing left a remarkable collection of unpublished photographs dating back to the 50s and 80s. His sole heir, son Alex Maspons explained that ‘It was never his [father’s] intention to do anything with the photographs, in terms of creating a business out of them. His photographswere for pleasure and satisfying his hobby’.

Agony + Ecstasy Gallery exclusively represents Maspon´s photographical archive of Ibiza.
