Biography
Oriol Maspons

'I don't use digital cameras and I never have. Like they say, if it's not broken, don't fix it. Analog cameras have always worked well for me. Basically, I am disconnected with this new technology because it came late in my life. The only digital camera I owned, my son took from me (laughs)"

Agony + Ecstasy Gallery are proud to present the unseen archive of Oriol Maspons who is celebrated as one of the most influential photojournalists of his time.  Specifically his documentation of the island of Ibiza between the 1950s and 1980s was pivotal in its representation of hedonism and trangression of freedom. 

 

The discovery of this archive subsequently  led to the production of Oriol Maspons Ibiza published by IDEA in 2024. Receiving critical acclaim from The Guardian Newspaper, DAZED Magazine, Diario de Ibiza, LÓfficiel, Harpers Baazar France, PERFECT Magazine and Vogue France. 

 

“Maspons forgotten archive is a wondrous treasure trove of the golden years of Ibiza's precious and magical beginnings. Each photo is a synonymous love affair between Oriol, his subjects and Ibiza. It was back in 2023 when I met Oriol's son Alex Maspons, who, in his early 50s was the sole propietor of his fathers catalogues and introduced me to the dusty negatives his father had left behind before his passing in Barcelona. Equipped a lightbox and a handful of negs, I witnessed a visual magic unearthing before my eyes. Perfectly bodied models being splashed with milk onto their bushy vaginas during a choregraphed ceremonial 'hippy wedding'.  These photographs were, by any means, a dream for any emerging gallerist."
