CAN Art Ibiza : Fly Me To Ibiza by Walter Rudolph, Booth S-7
Partnering for our second consecutive year with CAN Art Ibiza, Agony + Ecstasy debuted it's newest photoseries "Fly Me To Ibiza" by German photojournalist, Walter Rudolph. Often working in colour on film, Rudolph captured the stirrings of mid-century tourism in Ibiza, Spain, before mass migration and tourism began. Specifcally his work was captured in 1976 during his visits working for airlines Tui and Iberia as a commercial photographer for the companies advertising of holiday packages.
His flair for the island’s beauty is mirrored in his archive, one which offers an authentic richness and evokes a deep nostalgia for the viewer. A collection which is a time capsule showcasing a pivotal moment in Ibiza’s cultural evolution.
Rudolph captured everything - from historical landmarks, vintage Fiat 500s, bustling shoppers, hotel rooms, Spanish restaurants, beaches and candid moments between his subjects which echo the spontaneous nature of his work.
Notably, his photographs capture well-known locations that are still with us such as the famed El Corsario restaurant in Dalt Vila, Plaça de Vila, and the historic Montesol Hotel. Other spots documented by Rudolph, like the Penta Club and Fantasilandia Zoo in Sant Antoni, now live on only in the memories of those who once revelled in them.
His work remains both visually captivating and culturally significant, preserving a moment in time that continues to influence Ibiza’s creative spirit today.
